Blessed?

It's been almost exactly a year since I ran my 1st 1/2 marathon. I trained hard and ran my best and was hooked on the whole race experience....the crowds, the expos, the bibs, the shirts, and the MEDALS!! I've since run 2 more 1/2s, two 10ks (6 milers), and a few 5ks (3 miles). Hope and I logged a lot of miles running together as I pushed her in the stroller! We'd run short distances, longer distances to the park (one is a 4 mile round trip and the other 6), run to get donuts, and we'd run to Grandma & Grandpa's house. My last race was a 1/2 marathon (13.1) in Las Vegas with one of my dearest friends when I was 24 weeks pregnant. Running/races had become such a hobby/love of mine in just 1 short year!

I was convinced prior to having Hudson that we'd get a big-kid bike for Hope and she could ride next to me while I pushed Hudson in our Bob stroller. (That Bob stroller ended up being such a good find/deal on Craigslist and we got so much use out of it!) Well, Hope is not the proficient bike rider I had hoped she be and we didn't have an adaptor bar for Hudson's carseat to go on Bob. I had hoped to run in the evening as soon as Jaye got home, but that was working either due to dinner needing to be done or a baby needing to eat, etc. I was at a loss for how in the world I'd ever get back into running again and Jaye and I have a 10k at Disneyland on Aug. 31st. The whole having-2-kids thing was not working when it came to running.

Last weekend I got a text from a good friend of mine (one of my running buddies) saying that her sister-in-law had a double Bob stroller that she wanted to sell and asked if I was interested. The price was $150, which is an absolute steal but wasn't necessarily in our budget. As much as I really wanted it and would love to have it, it seemed so frivolous to add yet another stroller to our collection. I had kind of dismissed it but then as I talked to a few close friends they all told me to buy it and that they'd even pitch in money as an early birthday present. A double stroller just wasn't something I ever planned on having, especially not a double jogging stroller. The more I thought about it though, the more sense it made as it would lend to enhancing my sanity/health as it would allow us all to get out and MOVE! I talked it over with Jaye and we both agreed that it was a great deal and that it would be beneficial.

The night before I was supposed to pick it up, I got a text from my friend saying her SIL had dropped the price to $100. WOW! I picked up the stroller on Monday and gave my friend our check. That day alone I took the kids on 3 walks, a mile the first walk and 2 miles the second/third. The following day I took the kids out for my 1st run pushing a double stroller....it was wonderful! It felt so good to get out and run again and to enjoy some quiet and time without being shouted at or nagged, etc. Later that day I got yet another text from my friend telling me her SIL decided she wanted to GIVE the stroller to me and that she was ripping up our check. WHAT!?!?
As I thought about how amazing it was to be given this amazing stroller, it struck me how God blesses us beyond what we even think to ask for. I didn't ask for a double Bob. I would never have thought to pray for one as it wasn't a necessity and seemed so materialistic. Shoot, I didn't even know I wanted one prior to a week ago. And yet, God delights in me and blessed us with this incredible gift. I know it seems so silly but it just really struck me how God grants us the desires of our heart before we even know we have those desires. He chooses to surprise us and knock our socks off when we least expect it!

Because we didn't have to pay for our stroller I had told Jaye I wanted to give the $100 we would have spent to someone else to bless them as we had been blessed. We were debating who to bless when a very obvious answer came to us the next day. Someone we love needed to apply for a certification that cost $70 that they didn't have to spend. As a result, we were able to help pay for that certification that will hopefully help that person towards a job in the future.

As if the double Bob wasn't enough, I also found an amazing toy storage unit for FREE this last week! Again, something so trivial and materialistic, but such a blessing as eventually we will need something for Hudson as he gets bigger and it just happens to match the one we already have! Again, never would have thought to ask God for toy storage and yet He drops it right in front of me.
How much do we miss out on because we don't dare or dream to ask it of God? Who in our lives can we bless with what we have or the resources we have been given?! I'm reminded that God knows our needs (and our wants) and loves to bless His kids (even with little things). Makes me wonder who in my life could use to be blessed/reminded of His love!

May 19, 1997

On this day 16 years ago, my life was changed. I was 16 years old and was 1/2 way through a 12 day  mission trip to Guatemala.

I had always wanted to go on a trip like this and my Dad had come across a group called Students International (SI) while at a youth pastor's convention. He came back excited to tell me about an opportunity to do a medical mission trip (I wanted to be a nurse at that point) that was in May (I didn't want to do a summer trip b/c it would interfere with working at and going to camp). We researched the organization and discovered that there was a home-school team from Maine I could join (even though I wasn't home-schooled). I talked to my teachers ( I went to a public high school and would be missing 2 weeks of school) and they all gave me the go-ahead and said I wouldn't need to make up any work, just asked that I present about my trip when I returned. I wrote my support letters and received way more than I needed for my trip and I geared up to go on the adventure of a lifetime.

On Mother's Day that year (about a week before I was due to leave) I remember sitting in our high school Sunday School room when my Mom came into our class and somehow told my Dad and I that my cousin Ryan (I think he was 10 at that point) had been taken to the Children's hospital in San Diego and was in the ICU. I left Sunday school and left with  my Mom to San Diego. When we got to his room, Ryan was hooked up to more machines, wires, and tubes than I had ever thought possible. I remember being overwhelmed just looking at them. He didn't look like himself...he was puffy/swollen and parts of his skin had turned black. I had no clue what to make of it all. Nobody knew what was wrong or what had caused Ryan to get so sick. Over the course of the next week I made a few more trips to San Diego and my Mom stayed with my Uncle as often and as much as she could.

The time came to leave for my trip so I packed my bags and said goodbye to my parents who took me to LAX and put me on a plane to Guatemala. I wouldn't know anybody on this trip and was told that I could connect with a team member at the airport. I somehow found that team member and quickly said "hi" before boarding the plane. We both sat in different sections. I remember sitting in my seat, looking out the plane window and being both excited and nervous all at the same time. It was a red-eye flight and I'm not sure I slept at all. Someone from SI was at the airport to pick us up and before I knew it we were in a van and on our way. It'd be just over an hour's drive to get to Antigua from the capital city. There was so much to see on the drive...beautiful forest, dirty/busy city, small little towns with streets lined with colorful walls that contained doors and windows of all shapes and sizes.

That 1st week of ministry involved working in a small clinic in an amazing little village called Santa Maria de Jesus. The people were beautiful. They wore the traditional huipil and long skirt that was special to their town. Each huipil was so intricately and beautifully woven and most of the women wore their hair in long braids. We'd take the bus up the mountain each morning as a team and then our role was to assist the SI doctor (a Guatemalan national) in doing assessments and seeing patients. We mostly just did weights, heights, temperatures, etc. We'd work in the clinic each morning, break for lunch, and then do house-visits each afternoon. I loved it all! Once we got back from our work-sites each evening we had a bit of free-time to explore the city and then after dinner we'd do devotions and recap our days together. Each team would tell about their ministry site and what they saw, did, learned, etc.

The 2nd week our team was going to spend our mornings in the capital city, assisting/watching surgeries and helping in one of the hospitals. I don't remember what I saw that 1st day but it was probably a historectomy or a prostate surgery...seems like that was the majority of what we ended up seeing. After our time in Guatemala City that morning we came back for lunch and then went to a local "hospital", Frey Guillermo. Edgar, our site leader took us to the children's ward where there were probably 5-8 babies/toddlers. As we walked from crib to crib, we were told that most of these babies were here due to a cleft lip/palate and malnutrition. In order for these babies to have surgery they had to reach 10 lbs and most of them were 5 or 6 months old and nowhere near 10lbs. I got to hold 2 in particular, Jose Miguel & Maria, both close to 6 months and soo very tiny. When we left that place after an hour or so, I knew I had to go back. Those babies tugged at my heart like nothing/no one ever had.

When I got back to the SI house that afternoon, I was told that my Dad had called. I knew something was wrong. I remember sitting up on my top bunk and journaling, wondering why my Dad had called and trying to guess at what might be wrong. I knew he wouldn't call for nothing. Free time ended and dinner came. Sometime in the middle of dinner one of the staff members came and got me and told me I had a phone call. They must have known what my Dad was about to tell me because 2 of the staff members stayed in the room while I talked to my Dad. My Dad informed me that Ryan had died and that his memorial service would be on Saturday, the day I was supposed to fly home. He told me I had the choice to come home early so I could attend the service or stay and finish my trip. I chose to stay. I don't remember much else of that conversation but what I do remember is the sweet couple from the SI staff who sat with me once I hung up the phone.

I'm not big on crying in front of others or even showing much emotion of any kind and yet there I was, far from home, surrounded by people I had only known a week, and trying to process what I had just been told. I don't know what was said or really what I did, I just remember sitting in the office crying with George and Kathy sitting with me. I don't know if they said or did anything, whether they hugged me or held me, but I do remember that they were there and that I somehow felt safe. After awhile I joined my team for our nightly devotions and once again, don't remember much, just that they loved me and cared for my broken heart. I remember singing a certain song that I can't remember much of to this day. All I remember is: "Come and join the reapers, all the kingdom seekers, come and join the weary, the faithful men." (if that's even how it goes) That song somehow became our team song and still to this day, the little I can remember of it, goes through my head.

The rest of my 2nd week of ministry was spent in the capital city each morning and then each afternoon, as soon as free-time came, I'd head over to the hospital to hold those babies. When I was holding those babies and was sitting in that place, I knew that God was calling me to serve Him in a country that I had fallen in love with, with little ones who needed to be held and loved. God had captured my heart for a people that He loves and had placed within me a passion and desire to love them. I loved their culture, their clothes, their language...I loved everything about Guatemala! Before I left to return home at the end of my 2 weeks I was told about an opportunity to return that summer for a 4 week trip...I told them I'd be there (even though I had yet to ask my parents).

I flew home to be picked up by my parents and immediately taken to my Uncle's house where family had all gathered after Ryan's service. It was so surreal to be hit with the reality that Ryan was gone and to see the grief/sadness in the faces of my family members while still on a high of sorts from all that I had experienced in my 2 weeks in Guatemala. It was sort of a clash of life and death and I was caught in the middle. My life had changed and I had grown so much in 2 short weeks...I knew I'd never be the same. I did return that summer for 4 weeks and got to spend almost every day in that hospital, holding my sweet babies, usually both at the same time! Sitting there, holding them, I felt peace and content like never before. It was that feeling of knowing that I was exactly where God wanted me and was doing what He had created me to do. This is what I was made for...loving little ones and caring for those who were so fragile.

Fast-forward to now...I've been to Guatemala at least 7 times and have served in Kenya, Cambodia and India but Guatemala has has remained my favorite and has my heart. I still feel that God has called me to serve there full-time someday. When I met my husband we had a serious talk about missions and where I felt God was calling me...We were able to serve in Guatemala on 2 different trips after being married and after his 1st day of being there, he too felt God calling him to be down there full-time. God knew even before we did that we were perfect for each other and that He'd give us the same heart's desires. We have no idea when that day will be or what exactly our area of ministry will be, but we know with all our hearts that God has called us to Guatemala and we long for that day when we can live there and be there full-time. In the mean-time, until that day comes, we remain faithful to where God has placed us and learn to love/serve in the here and now, right where He has us!

Sibling Love

Hudson's big sister loves him like no-one else! He is the 1st person she looks for in the morning and usually the last one she kisses before going to bed at night!  She is constantly wanting to hold him, talk to him, laugh for him, play with him, etc. Who knew I would be so blessed just watching these 2 together already...and it's only been 4 weeks!
Easter! Hudson was only 6 days old!
Tummy time is way more fun with sister around!
Every morning she washes her hands and then asks to hold brother! She often wants to be wherever he is and loves sitting next to him in the car!

She's getting better at actually holding/supporting him!
His first smiles were for his sister! At first I wondered if it was legit but he just kept smiling at her, over and over again!
The 1st of many walks together.

Hudson is Here!

It's been almost a month, but better late than never! Maybe someday I'll actually write out his whole birth story, but for now, this is what I journaled the morning after he was born:

"Our perfect little boy is here and he's just wonderful! Water broke @ 8am and we checked in at 10:30ish. (he didn't arrive until 10:39pm) He's just right with his chubby cheeks and flat little nose! It was so incredible to hold him skin-to-skin right away and to watch him move his way to my left breast. God's handiwork indeed!  He latched on perfectly. So blessed to be his Mom! Jaye was wonderful and tender as always-I am so lucky! He whispered his words of encouragement with each push and tears filled his eyes as Hudson arrived! My prince charming! So far, Hudson is easy-going and content. I am so excited for Hope to meet him today! We've been blessed with along time since 3pm yesterday and it's been good but I can't wait to be a family of 4 today! This little guy will be so loved and adored by his big sister!!! God is so good and I can't wait to see what He has planned for Hudson!"

He was born 3/25 @ 10:39pm, weighing in at 8.9lbs & 21 1/4 inches long!
Our 1st self-portrait with Hudson! (An hour old maybe)
Getting ready to leave labor & delivery and go to our room. So in awe!
1st family photo all together!
Hope meeting Hudson for the 1st time is probably one of my all-time cherished/favorite moments! She crawled up on the bed with me and just kept giggling and looking at me, full of sheer delight! I've never seen her so excited or overjoyed as she was at that moment! Tears filled my eyes as I looked at my sweet girl admiring her brother! At one point we both just giggled and laughed as there were no words to capture our pure joy! Once we finally stopped giggling over Hudson, she said he was so cute and so tiny! That moment was the beginning of a fierce love and bond that will never be matched!

Hope turns 4!

This year, Hope got to have 2 birthdays! We celebrated her "pretend birthday" at Disneyland early in March, as she wanted to go before brother came. Hope got her very 1st autograph book and picked a special Minnie pen and our day was all about finding characters and getting autographs! We had a really fun day and it was so fun to watch Hope beam with excitement and eagerly meet all the different characters! Her favorite of the day was Princess Minnie Mouse! She even picked a princess Minnie to take home!
 Birthday treasure box cake! YUM!

For her actual birthday we decided to keep things low-key and just do little things together as a family. (we'd only been home 2 days with baby brother by then) Once everyone was up and ready Jaye took Hope to get donuts (her favorite). They took their donuts to the train station and watched the trains together and played on the big bridge that stretches over the tracks. While they were out, Hope decided her new bike (birthday gift) needed a bell so she and Daddy found a bell and rear-view mirror to add to her bike!

Hope requested Subway for lunch so my parents and Grandma met us there. We all enjoyed lunch together and then Jaye took Hope home to ride her  bike while I took brother to another Dr. appt. After dinner all the Grandparents and Great Grandma came over for cupcakes. Hope wanted a Tinkerbell party so we decorated the house with Tinkerbell and had cupcakes, pink with sprinkles and Tinkerbell rings...just as she requested. It ended up being a really great day for everyone!!

It's hard to believe it's been 4 years. Being in the hospital with Hudson brought back a lot of memories of when Hope was born. Little did we know 4 years ago how much richer and fuller our lives would be because of 1 sweet little girl who is full of personality! She is full of 4-year old personality and sass and sometimes I can't help but laugh at the things she says or the way she rolls her eyes or the funny moves she makes! We have been so blessed by Hope and are loving watching her as a big sister. She is so gentle and kind and is so absolutely in love with her baby brother!

Here's some of her favorites: (according to Hope)

Color: pink
Friend: Asher and all my other friends
Toy: hammerhead shark in the  bathtub, I love him
Book: ABC book
Thing to do with Daddy: play toys, watch movies, eat peanuts & popcorn, star wars
Thing to do with Mommy: read books and play with  my toys
Show to watch: Star Wars
Princess: Ariel
Place to go: the zoo (even though we haven't been in over a year)
When she grows up: a builder
Food: pancakes
Drink: pink lemonade
Something you're really good at: coloring in the lines, connect the dot to dot, school books
Stuffed Animal: Sissy bear, beluga, Hopskotch Bunny

As I was finishing this, Hope says, "there's one more thing you should know about me: that I'm a good friend and I share and I don't give up"...

Hudson's Room:finished product!

My Mom putting her gifts and talents to work for this little guy...she made the bumper, valance, & blanket!
Jaye's old lunch boxes decorate the shelf, his old comic books are hung on the wall & Hope's R2D2 mug is being used as a pacifier holder on his dresser! Jaye found the light-saber light and had to have it!
Jaye put his letters together & arranged and placed all the ships/stars! Hope made him the Build-A-Bear puppy with Jaye and she picked out the baby Mickey on the day we found out we were having a boy!
Hope has been so curious about all of Hudson's stuff...she gets excited when we tell her that it used to be hers!
Filling brother's bed with extra love and hugs!

Any Day Now...

I'm officially 1 week away from my due date and I am ready to meet this little man already!!! His room is mostly ready (with the exception of some decals and frames for the wall), his clothes are washed, the diapers are arranged, and all of our bags are packed. While I know he'll come when HE is ready, I find myself each day hoping that today will be the day. Sure there are things we should still do: set up co-sleeper, clean some more, set up swing, get out pump, pillow, etc. but those can be done when once he's here!

Physically, I am ready to be done with this pregnancy stuff. I am so fortunate in that I am not as big as most, but I am still uncomfortable and feel HUGE!!! I don't love not being able to walk fast and keep up with Hope and bend over and pick things up without it being akward. It's been hot this week and I have discovered that I own 1 maternity skirt and very few short-sleeved shirts. I know, silly stuff that doesn't really matter.

The goal was anytime after last Sunday and now that Sunday has come and gone, he can join us whenever! We were able to take Hope to Disneyland on Sunday for her "pretend birthday" and I am so thankful for the day together! I wanted to be sure she had a day that was just for her before her brother came. She dressed like a princess, ate lunch with the princesses, and pretty much was in charge of the day! I so enjoyed watching her excitement and enthusiasm as she collected autographs from the characters and took pictures with them...she was so excited to try something new! We didn't go on many rides at all, but we sure had a fun day!

I've been thinking over the past few months about how thankful I am for the almost 4 year age-gap between these 2 kids. It has been soooo fun watching Hope grow and understand what lies ahead. She is so sweet and tender, coming up and hugging and kissing my belly throughout the day. She'll come up and put her lips on my stomach and tell Hudson ,"I love you brother" or "sweet dreams brother". She is going to be such an amazing big sister and I am so excited for the relationship they will have with each other. I have a hard time imagining life at the beginning, but can easily picture him being 2 and her being 6 and going on adventures and trips together! I am so thankful for her sweet spirit and kind heart and I can't wait to see how that will play out as a big sister!

We have been so blessed with hand-me-downs for Hudson and wonderful gifts from friends and family. We started out this journey of #2 with zero boy clothes, zero boy blankets, bedding, etc. and now when I walk into his room I am overwhelmed with how perfect it is and how we have exactly what we need for this sweet boy! Once his room is finished I'll have to get some pictures up as I am so happy with how it turned out!

So many random thoughts....had to at least "write" a few down...
