Operation Christmas Child

As a Mom, it is my prayer that my kids will grow up to love and follow Christ. I want them to grow up with an attitude of gratitude and a heart that wants to help others. As I've been thinking about Christmas and the season ahead of us, I want to shift our focus to helping others rather than getting gifts. I have grand ideas of fancy advent calendars and countdown crafts for Hope to do each day but reality is that there just isn't time (or energy) to do it this year. However, I do think it is very do-able and realistic to find 1 project that we can do together each weekend that will somehow bless someone else!

A few weeks ago we took Hope to Target and helped her fill a "shoebox" (she picked a pretty pink flowered plastic box) with things for another little girl who is 4, just like her! I loved watching her look at all the things around her and carefully choose exactly what she wanted in her box! She picked socks of her favorite characters, rainbow gloves, a stuffed polar bear AND a baby doll, My Little Pony toothbrush/paste plus extra Monsters Inc toothpaste, and other fun items! She kept talking about how much the little 4 year old girl was going to love her box that she was making and she is absolutely right! She proudly delivered her shoebox to church so it could be sent to that perfect little girl that God has designated just for her box!

This past Saturday we went as a family to the Air1 Operation Christmas Child packing party. I had heard about it on the radio and thought it'd be a fun thing we could do together as a family. In order to go to the processing center for OCC, you have to be 13 so this seemed like a great opportunity for Hope to get involved. What a fun night we had! Hope would pick her box & the age of the child she was packing it for (always for a girl) and Jaye would pick a box too (always for a boy the same age as the one Hope was packing for). We'd then walk through the lines choosing items for inside each box. Hope carefully chose which toothbrush, notebook, coloring book, toys, soap, color of washcloth, type of candy, and stuffed animal would go inside each box. We ended up going through the process 6 times, making a total of 12 boxes! One round, we got to the toy table where they had little toys for boys and girls and although Hope was making a box for a girl, she decided that the box needed a matchbox car. The worker tried to convince her otherwise but she insisted the little girl would like a car...and so I let her choose the car. (I remember hearing stories of boxes that had specific seemingly random items and how those items were exactly what that child and his/her family needed.) Who knows, maybe that little girl has a brother who won't otherwise get a toy or maybe she has always wanted a car for herself! After each set of boxes was packed, we'd stop and squat down as a family and pray over our boxes. The best was the times Hope was the one praying over the boxes! I am so proud of my sweet girl and the wisdom she already has about how great our God is!

Not sure what our next few projects will be, but I am excited to continue to instill in my sweet girl a heart for others!

Five Minute Friday: Fly

"Mom, when I grow up, I want to fly. I'm not going to fly on an airplane, I want to fly with wings. I just really want to fly."

This is an ongoing conversation in our house. My sweet girl dreams of flying. As I kindly suggest maybe she could become a pilot or a astronaut, or go in a hot-air balloon, she just looks at me (as if she's humoring my suggestions) and then reminds me that she wants to fly on her own. Do I tell her its impossible? Do I tell her people can't fly? Do I dash her dream of flying? Nope, I just tell her, "maybe someday". Who am I to tell her she can't fly?! I want her to continue to dream big to shoot for the stars, to strive for something great. And so I encourage her to study hard, be a good listener, be a kind friend and dream big!! Who knows, maybe someday she really will fly!!

Five Minute Friday: Truth

"But the voice of truth tells me a different story. The voice of truth says 'Do not be afraid'. The voice of truth says this is for my glory. Out of all the voices calling out to me, I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth."

I probably butchered those lyrics, but this is what I immediately thought of when I saw the word "Truth". The other thought that comes to mind is how hard it can be to tell the truth. I am not a confrontational person. I am go-with-the-flow, don't-rock-the-boat, kind of person. I don't want to cause conflict, I don't want to hurt feelings. Wether it be big things or small things, I have a hard time speaking truth when it may cause some discomfort. So, rather than speak truth, I keep things to myself and assume others can read my  mind or that they should know that I am hurt or bothered or disappointed.

Five Minute Friday: Tree

Psalm 1 references how a man who delights in the law of the Lord and meditates on His word will be like a TREE firmly planted. The thing with trees is there is way more than meets the eye. The whole support system of a tree is hidden from view, it stretches deep underground and spreads out in the form of roots. When the winds blow and the rain comes, the tree stands tall because it's roots are sprawled out, deep beneath the ground.

Our house is surrounded by trees. They are everywhere! Apparently, whoever lived here originally had quite the green thumb. Too bad the subsequent owner/owners let them go crazy! We have 4 trees on our patio and while they provide great shade for both us and our neighbors, they drop sooo many leaves! Our planter is probably covered with a least a foot of leaves and our cement is stained with the dark colored berries. Our front yard has some huge trees that also provide great shade but are growing out of control, towering high over our yard and house.

Both the unseen and seen parts of trees are cause for LOTS of work. Pruning, choppping, raking...it seems the work is never done. It seems to me that our lives are a lot like all these trees. We have unseen roots that have shaped us and made us who we are. Hopefully our "roots" keep us grounded and keep us from falling when storms come. What is visible to the outside world is sometimes messy and needs upkeep and often times, takes a lot of work! If we are firmly rooted in Christ, we can dig deep and grow tall.

How's that for random?!

Five Minute Friday: Grace

Undeserved, unsolicited, unending
The gift of a 2nd chance. The slate wiped clean and the past forgotten. How often we take grace for granted and don’t recognize it’s value and importance in our lives. Dietrich Bonhoeffer writes about “costly grace” in his book, The Cost of Discipleship. The idea is simple…so often we take advantage of God’s grace. We make poor choices, we choose the wrong, we deliberately sin, knowing that God’s grace has covered it all and that we can start anew. We cheapen His grace by our lack of gratitude and living as one SAVED by such grace. When we truly understand the cost of the grace offered to us, we choose to live differently. We remember His death, his suffering, his pain…and we choose to live in gratitude.
Grace. A favorite of one I hold dear. A gift freely given and undeserved, yet I can claim it as my own. Grace. A new beginning…the old has gone and the new has come and we never have to turn back to what once but instead look forward to the future filled with hope and excitement because His grace has saved us and has made whole what once was broken and incomplete.

Five Minute Friday - Together

When I think of "together", I think of my sweet little family. Maybe that's because there's no one else I'd rather be with. The nights we all get to be home together, those are my favorite. Dinner, bathtimes, bedtimes filled with stories and sweet prayers for those we love, catching up with my better half, watching a show, enjoying a glass, crawling into bed to snuggle up to my better half...wouldn't trade those moments for the world!

It's when we're all together that I am reminded of how perfect we are for each other. He knows me so well and understands me without words needing to be spoken. He pours into our family endlessly and makes the times together matter...whether it be building Lego houses and contraptions or coloring masterpieces, he takes time to make "together" count. He wraps up the baby after a bath in a nice clean towel, turns on the light saber, carries on a conversation, and gets the jammies on with great intentionality and love. I look at this gift, this better half, I have been given and I find myself so thankful for being together...as a family, as a couple, as a team. Everything is definitely better when we're TOGETHER!

5-minute Friday!

Team 365

Yesterday I embarked on a journey that I hope and pray will become habit forming and life changing. Thanks to facebook, I discovered that there was going to be a group of women committing to read through the New Testament between Sep. 24th and Dec. 31st. The plan was to use the One Year Chronological Bible. A group was being formed that would provide accountability, insight, feedback and support over the next 3ish months. The mention of this group came at the perfect time as God has really been stirring in my heart about a lot of things.

I have never been good at consistent time in the Word. I've started various reading plans and plans to read through the Bible but I don't think I've ever gotten past Leviticus...or if I have it is because I have skipped that book but then later stopped reading anyway. I am the type of person who needs a plan, to know what I "should" be reading. I always liked reading through Proverbs as there is one chapter for each day of the month (and they were short). I have come to a point where I am realizing that if I truly want to shift my thinking when it comes to finances and time, then I need to make sure that God is 1st and that I am truly seeking Him and focusing on Him.

So, I just began yesterday and still have a ways to go, but I am excited about this! I am excited to be in the Word, to have a plan, and to have accountability. My prayer/hope is that this would be habit forming and life changing. I want to hear from God each day and really tune in to what He has for me. So, the plan is to sit at my table each morning during Hudson's 1st nap of the day and do my reading, journal/reflect, and then share with the group. It's only day 2 but so far I've enjoyed reading what others have gained from the reading as it's usually something I didn't notice or gravitate towards. :)

So begins my journey...

Present

"You must be present to win."

The above quote seems like such a given, but how often are we truly NOT present?! I've been thinking a lot lately about how much I hate iPhones. How does 1 little machine steal so much of our time and attention?! How does 1 tiny rectangle suck so much of our time and cause us to be disengaged?! I've had this sort of distaste for them since they were 1st introduced in our family. I used to get so frustrated with my husband when we'd be out and about and I'd look over and find him on his phone. But then a year or so later I got my own phone and became equally as guilty. To top it all off, Hope now has her "phone" (one of our old ones) and falls right into line with her parents. I hate it!

I often wonder what this generation of kids will be like as grownups. Will they be able to make meaningful/lasting relationships? Will they engage in true and deep conversations with those around them? How many milestones or moments were missed by their parents b/c there was a phone between parent and child? When they think back to time spent as a family, will the phone be a primary image/memory?

So how do we unplug? How do we truly become PRESENT in each moment and with the people we love? Do we set time limits? Do we set a proper place? How do we as parents model for our kids that connection is important, that face-to-face time is always more important that Facetime? How do we teach them to give people our un-divided attention?

To be honest, I'm not 100% sure what the answer is but I know I definitely spend WAY too much time on my phone. It may only be for a minute or two here and there, but those are minutes that my kids deserve to have. I don't necessarily think they need to be done away with all together, but limits need to be set & boundaries need to be placed. . . for the grown ups and the kids!

Struggling

Our church just started a new series called "Surplus". The whole idea is to get beyond the point of struggling and move to a place of surplus. This past weekend's sermon came with a hand-out in the bulletin to help you figure out where you stand (struggling, stable, solid, or surplus) in various areas (financially, physically, spiritually). As Jaye and I looked at the paper we immediately knew that we fit the "struggling" category when it came to our finances. Every bullet point for the classification of "struggling" applied to us and to be honest, it was pretty depressing.

I'll be the 1st to admit that I am not good with money. I am not and have never been a very good steward of the money we earn and the things we have been blessed with. I'm not sure what it is that causes me to feel the need to buy things that we don't need or things that I know are not budgeted for, but I am 100% guilty. I am horrible at only buying what is on the list, especially when it comes to Target! Since having kid #2 I've found that Amazon Prime is my new best friend...no more trips to Target with 2 little ones when I can order it online and have it arrive 2 days later! This has been good and bad.

Matthew 6 has always hit home with me, but usually in a way that convicts me. That whole "where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" thing...it gets me every time. Every time I come across it I am reminded that my treasure and my heart very often tend to be in things, in material possessions. I have become quite the consumer of things that moth and rust destroy...not necessarily big things, but lots of little things that all tend to add up!

God has definitely been moving in my heart the past month or so when it comes to our finances and I have had to apologize for poor choices and lack of stewardship. It seems that I have been reminded of Matthew 6 many times over the past month, whether it be at church, in a quote, a book, etc. On Monday I read this quote: "The place where your treasure is, is the place you will most want to be, and end up being." Again, back to "treasure". The place where my treasure is primarily places is not where I want to be and is definitely not where I want to end up.

So, all that being said, we have a long way to go but I think my heart and my head have finally reached an agreement that where I am at, is not where I want to be. We finally have a plan and an end is finally in sight...now I just need to focus my heart on Jesus and find my satisfaction in HIM and I think change may finally be in the works! I almost want to tattoo the word "treasure" in a place where I'd see it daily as a reminder to stop storing up earthly treasures and to instead, store up treasure is things that last and matter.

A boy and his food...

Hudson has recently discovered food! He got to the point where he'd watch our every bite and started reaching for whatever we were eating so we decided to give him some food of his own! His 1st food was banana and boy was that a mess! His 2nd was avocado, his 3rd was squash and he's had green beans and sweet potatoes since then too! He loves his food and gets upset now if we are eating and he is not!
Avocados were a hit!
1st banana

He's all about doing it himself already...uh oh!

A Visit to Mommy's Work (as a patient)

As if starting preschool on Wednesday morning wasn't eventful enough...We got to spend Wednesday night in the Emergency Department with Hope. After dinner we got her in the shower and were going to get her ready for bed as she'd had a long exciting day. While she was in the shower, I was sitting in the bathroom and she was leaning out the door to tell me all about school. Well, guess who slipped and fell. I knew from watching her fall that she had hit her chin so I picked her up from the floor of the tub, shower still running & Hope soaking wet. Once she stopped crying I sat down with her and turned her around so I could see where she was hurt. I discovered her mouth was bloody and called for Jaye to bring me a paper towel so I could wipe it clean to see what was bleeding. When she fell, she hit her chin and then bit her lip. She had a small laceration just under her lip @ the corner of her mouth. It was a clean cut, but it was deep. I called work and texted a picture of Hope's lip to one of the nurses and asked her to show one of the doctors and ask if I should bring Hope in or if there was something I could just do at home.
They said she needed to come in. So...I got Hope dressed, she packed her backpack with things to do, Jaye combed her hair and then I quickly fed Hudson before we left.

Thankfully we just walked back into the Emergency Dept. and didn't have to wait in the waiting room. They had a bed waiting for us. (the perks of working in the ED) As we drove to the ED I had talked with Hope about how they may fix her lip. She wasn't nervous or afraid at all & was excited to go to my work.
After being seen by the resident and then the attending, they decided that stitches were the best choice because of the location of the laceration. They put some topical numbing liquid (LET) on her laceration and Hope and I watched a movie and made necklaces together while we waited the 30 minutes for it to work.
When it came time to fix her lip I was a little nervous about the lidocane they'd inject. Usually the lido is the worst part for kids when they need stitches because it burns/stings really bad. We used Buzzy (my favorite tool for pain-free pokes) and she didn't budge or flinch when they injected it. Praise God! She held completely still the whole time and watched a show on the iPad with my co-worker, the Child Life Specialist.
Hope did an amazing job and everyone kept commenting on how impressed they were with her! That's my girl! I was such a proud Mommy!!!
Once it was stitched up (2 stitches later), my co-worker brought her 2 prizes to choose from. Hope was so excited and thrilled with her jar filled with goodies!!! We were out the door about 2 hours after we walked in.
On the drive home we stopped at Target (at 10:45pm) to pick up some hydrogen peroxide and neosporin and a little prize (she didn't cry or move...I think that deserves a prize). She was happy as can be and even got a few stickers given to her by the Target employee. As we were walking out the door she looked up at me and told me, "Mom, today is a awesome day because people keep giving me stuff!"
Our drive home from Target was 5 minutes max...I think she was asleep before we even drove out of the parking lot! What a busy and exciting day she had!

Preschool!

Hope started preschool on Wednesday! We found an amazing little school that we fell in love with and now Hope gets to attend 2 days a week! A few weeks ago she got to pick out a new backpack & lunchbox and then this past Sunday we had "School celebration day" where we had lunch at her favorite place and she got to build a new stuffed animal at Build-A-Bear & pick school clothes for her bear. She's been counting down the sleeps until school started for 2 weeks now!

When Jaye was little, his Mom used to draw monkey pictures/scenes on his napkins for lunch. Jaye drew/colored this fun napkin for Hope to find in her lunch on her 1st day!
 Ready to go to school!
Hope's sweet teacher sent me this picture & it made my day! When I picked her up she was telling me how her teacher tried to pedal the bike so Hope could have a ride in the back and how Hope just laughed and laughed! I am so grateful for this great place & this new adventure for my girl!

More from our family photo shoot!

Super Dad!

I've been reminded lately of what an incredible man I am married to! Watching the way he loves each of us so well has made my heart swell with pride and has made me so thankful for him!
Whether it's making projects with Hope, getting Hudson ready for bed each night, pushing the stroller, wearing the Ergo, building amazing tents, playing legos, coloring pictures, playing XBox, grilling dinner, or cleaning house...he does it gladly. He provides for our family, he protects each one of us, he assures that our home is cared for and we have what we need. I am so grateful for this amazing man that I get to spend each day with and do life with!
I am so grateful my kids get to grow up with such an amazing Daddy who pours into them and intentionally spends quality time with each of them, doing what they love. I love that he isn't ashamed to be a Dad and proudly wears the baby or carries the diaper bag (even when it was pink with flowers)!
What a blessing it is to sit back some days and just watch him in action with our family...playing dress up with Hope or teaching her a new skill, snuggling with Hudson or showing him around the house!
There are so many reasons why I love this man, but right now one of my favorite ones is the fact that he is a pretty amazing & wonderful Daddy to our kids! He dreams big for them and for us and we are all so blessed to call him ours!!!

My sweet Hope!

My house is extra quiet this morning as Hope got to have a sleep-over with her Grammy, Grampy, & Great Grandma last night. I thought I was going to enjoy the quiet, enjoy only having 1 little one this morning... but something is definitely missing! I surprisingly miss the constant chatter, the "Mom, I'm hungry", the "Mom, play with  me" and even the hum of cartoons in the background. This morning it was just Hudson and I and the occasional singing of his playmat or jumperoo. As much as the noise and constant go-go-go makes me crazy some morning, this morning has reminded me that I wouldn't trade it for anything!

I love my sweet little chatterbox! I love the way she can dominate a conversation at a table full of grown-ups. I love hearing about her "obstacle course" that she's imagined/dreamed up for us to do. I love her requests of "play with me" and "help me" or "Mom, let's pretend" or "Mom, let's play a game". She is definitely never at a loss for words and sometimes the things she comes up with make me laugh. Last week at Pretend City, I was showing her the big sandbox/beach area (which I thought she's love to play in). When she looked at the sand, she looked back at me and said, "Mom, I'd rather not get my dress all dirty in the sand"...Okay, good point...but since when did we care about getting dirty?!? She's growing up so fast!

As I sat watching Hudson and encouraging him at play this morning, I couldn't help but think about how different his morning must seem without his sister around. No constant kissing, no getting right up in his face to tell him, "Brother, I love you so so so so so so so so soooooooooooooooooo much!". It was almost as if he was looking around for his best friend, his favorite person in the whole wide world, his daily source of smiles and joy!

Tomorrow she starts preschool. For the first time in 4 years my not-so-little girl will get to venture on her own for 4 hours, twice a week. I am soooo excited for her to explore, to learn, to grow, to make new friends and learn to be a good listener and follow directions. We have celebrated the best we can this past week or so as we get ready for preschool to start. She picked a new backpack & lunchbox. We took her to lunch at her favorite place and Daddy suggested we visit Build-A-Bear and dress her new bear in back-to-school clothes...all part of our "school celebration"! Daddy built her an amazingly HUGE tent to sleep in on Sunday night and we even had a dinner-picnic in it. We want our girl to know that we are so excited for her and we want her to know that this is a big deal and that she can do it!

I've been saying for weeks how excited I am for the peace and quiet those 2 mornings a week, but truth-be-told...I'm going to miss her. It's only a few hours, 2 times a week, but I know I'm going to look forward to picking her up and hearing all about her day and resuming our normal pace, filled with the constant chatter of my sweet Hope! I am so proud of the little girl that she is becoming. I love her sweet spirit, her great imagination, her creativity and ingenuity, her passion about praying at each meal! Why God chose us to be her parents is beyond me but I am so grateful for this precious gift that He has placed in our care and I am so excited to see the plans He has for her as she grows up!

So here's to preschool...to new adventures and new routines, to quieter mornings, and new things learned!

In Case of Emergency

Our little girl is getting so big! In 2 short weeks she'll be starting preschool and beginning her school career! We are so excited for her to learn and grow and have the experience of school! As I've been filling out paperwork and getting things ready, I have been working on putting together a backpack that will stay at school that will be "in case of emergency".

Today I placed in her backpack a blanket to keep her warm, a blankie to snuggle with, a little stuffed doll she loved as a baby, 2 of her favorite  books, some spare clothes, baby wipes, 2 pictures: one of Jaye, Hope and I on her birthday this past year and another picture of Hope & Hudson and then a little letter that her teachers can read to her. I pray this never ever has to be used, but it is all ready...just in case.
What do you write in a letter to your pride & joy, to the little girl who turned your world upside down and has made you a better/stronger person? How do you sum up in words how much this little person means to you and how do you offer words of comfort on a piece of paper? I think I could've written pages and pages, but tried to keep in short and sweet instead.

My Precious Hopey,

If you are reading this letter, it means that something has happened that was probably a little bit scary. I bet you were so brave! Stay close to your teachers and be a good listener-they will take great care of you until Mommy and Daddy can be with you again. Imagine Mommy laying next to you, snuggling you close and singing with you. Remember the words of our song?

"Jesus, Keeper of this life. You are our refuge, our Savior, our Guide. Watch over this little one tonight. Guard her every footstep as she travels this life. And in some quiet moment, draw her to your side. That she may come to know you Jesus, as the Keeper of this life."

Jesus is right there with you Hope and He will never leave you! If you feel sad or afraid, talk to Jesus. He loves to hear you pray to Him.

Your Daddy and I love you so much baby girl! You are a wonderful girl with a kind heart and sweet spirit! You are the sweetest big sister I know and Hudson loves you too! Be brave and know that we love you to infinity and beyond!

Love: Mommy & Daddy

Family Pictures Sneak Peak!

My friend Cheryn was in town from CO and so graciously said "yes" when I asked her months ago about taking family pictures for us. She has a real gift/talent for photography and I love the pics she takes of others! She's not a "professional" but very well could be! Here's just a few of the pics I've seen so far...

I want to blow this one up on canvas and hang it in our playroom!
I love this one of Jaye and I!
Love this one too!

I wish Hudson was looking up in this one. It's my favorite pose and everyone has great smiles!

We took pics at 2 different locations and these are only a few of the 1st ones from the 1st spot...can't wait to see the rest! I'm so excited with what I've seen so far! Now I Just have to figure out how/where to display our pics and what else to do with them!

Blessed?

It's been almost exactly a year since I ran my 1st 1/2 marathon. I trained hard and ran my best and was hooked on the whole race experience....the crowds, the expos, the bibs, the shirts, and the MEDALS!! I've since run 2 more 1/2s, two 10ks (6 milers), and a few 5ks (3 miles). Hope and I logged a lot of miles running together as I pushed her in the stroller! We'd run short distances, longer distances to the park (one is a 4 mile round trip and the other 6), run to get donuts, and we'd run to Grandma & Grandpa's house. My last race was a 1/2 marathon (13.1) in Las Vegas with one of my dearest friends when I was 24 weeks pregnant. Running/races had become such a hobby/love of mine in just 1 short year!

I was convinced prior to having Hudson that we'd get a big-kid bike for Hope and she could ride next to me while I pushed Hudson in our Bob stroller. (That Bob stroller ended up being such a good find/deal on Craigslist and we got so much use out of it!) Well, Hope is not the proficient bike rider I had hoped she be and we didn't have an adaptor bar for Hudson's carseat to go on Bob. I had hoped to run in the evening as soon as Jaye got home, but that was working either due to dinner needing to be done or a baby needing to eat, etc. I was at a loss for how in the world I'd ever get back into running again and Jaye and I have a 10k at Disneyland on Aug. 31st. The whole having-2-kids thing was not working when it came to running.

Last weekend I got a text from a good friend of mine (one of my running buddies) saying that her sister-in-law had a double Bob stroller that she wanted to sell and asked if I was interested. The price was $150, which is an absolute steal but wasn't necessarily in our budget. As much as I really wanted it and would love to have it, it seemed so frivolous to add yet another stroller to our collection. I had kind of dismissed it but then as I talked to a few close friends they all told me to buy it and that they'd even pitch in money as an early birthday present. A double stroller just wasn't something I ever planned on having, especially not a double jogging stroller. The more I thought about it though, the more sense it made as it would lend to enhancing my sanity/health as it would allow us all to get out and MOVE! I talked it over with Jaye and we both agreed that it was a great deal and that it would be beneficial.

The night before I was supposed to pick it up, I got a text from my friend saying her SIL had dropped the price to $100. WOW! I picked up the stroller on Monday and gave my friend our check. That day alone I took the kids on 3 walks, a mile the first walk and 2 miles the second/third. The following day I took the kids out for my 1st run pushing a double stroller....it was wonderful! It felt so good to get out and run again and to enjoy some quiet and time without being shouted at or nagged, etc. Later that day I got yet another text from my friend telling me her SIL decided she wanted to GIVE the stroller to me and that she was ripping up our check. WHAT!?!?
As I thought about how amazing it was to be given this amazing stroller, it struck me how God blesses us beyond what we even think to ask for. I didn't ask for a double Bob. I would never have thought to pray for one as it wasn't a necessity and seemed so materialistic. Shoot, I didn't even know I wanted one prior to a week ago. And yet, God delights in me and blessed us with this incredible gift. I know it seems so silly but it just really struck me how God grants us the desires of our heart before we even know we have those desires. He chooses to surprise us and knock our socks off when we least expect it!

Because we didn't have to pay for our stroller I had told Jaye I wanted to give the $100 we would have spent to someone else to bless them as we had been blessed. We were debating who to bless when a very obvious answer came to us the next day. Someone we love needed to apply for a certification that cost $70 that they didn't have to spend. As a result, we were able to help pay for that certification that will hopefully help that person towards a job in the future.

As if the double Bob wasn't enough, I also found an amazing toy storage unit for FREE this last week! Again, something so trivial and materialistic, but such a blessing as eventually we will need something for Hudson as he gets bigger and it just happens to match the one we already have! Again, never would have thought to ask God for toy storage and yet He drops it right in front of me.
How much do we miss out on because we don't dare or dream to ask it of God? Who in our lives can we bless with what we have or the resources we have been given?! I'm reminded that God knows our needs (and our wants) and loves to bless His kids (even with little things). Makes me wonder who in my life could use to be blessed/reminded of His love!

May 19, 1997

On this day 16 years ago, my life was changed. I was 16 years old and was 1/2 way through a 12 day  mission trip to Guatemala.

I had always wanted to go on a trip like this and my Dad had come across a group called Students International (SI) while at a youth pastor's convention. He came back excited to tell me about an opportunity to do a medical mission trip (I wanted to be a nurse at that point) that was in May (I didn't want to do a summer trip b/c it would interfere with working at and going to camp). We researched the organization and discovered that there was a home-school team from Maine I could join (even though I wasn't home-schooled). I talked to my teachers ( I went to a public high school and would be missing 2 weeks of school) and they all gave me the go-ahead and said I wouldn't need to make up any work, just asked that I present about my trip when I returned. I wrote my support letters and received way more than I needed for my trip and I geared up to go on the adventure of a lifetime.

On Mother's Day that year (about a week before I was due to leave) I remember sitting in our high school Sunday School room when my Mom came into our class and somehow told my Dad and I that my cousin Ryan (I think he was 10 at that point) had been taken to the Children's hospital in San Diego and was in the ICU. I left Sunday school and left with  my Mom to San Diego. When we got to his room, Ryan was hooked up to more machines, wires, and tubes than I had ever thought possible. I remember being overwhelmed just looking at them. He didn't look like himself...he was puffy/swollen and parts of his skin had turned black. I had no clue what to make of it all. Nobody knew what was wrong or what had caused Ryan to get so sick. Over the course of the next week I made a few more trips to San Diego and my Mom stayed with my Uncle as often and as much as she could.

The time came to leave for my trip so I packed my bags and said goodbye to my parents who took me to LAX and put me on a plane to Guatemala. I wouldn't know anybody on this trip and was told that I could connect with a team member at the airport. I somehow found that team member and quickly said "hi" before boarding the plane. We both sat in different sections. I remember sitting in my seat, looking out the plane window and being both excited and nervous all at the same time. It was a red-eye flight and I'm not sure I slept at all. Someone from SI was at the airport to pick us up and before I knew it we were in a van and on our way. It'd be just over an hour's drive to get to Antigua from the capital city. There was so much to see on the drive...beautiful forest, dirty/busy city, small little towns with streets lined with colorful walls that contained doors and windows of all shapes and sizes.

That 1st week of ministry involved working in a small clinic in an amazing little village called Santa Maria de Jesus. The people were beautiful. They wore the traditional huipil and long skirt that was special to their town. Each huipil was so intricately and beautifully woven and most of the women wore their hair in long braids. We'd take the bus up the mountain each morning as a team and then our role was to assist the SI doctor (a Guatemalan national) in doing assessments and seeing patients. We mostly just did weights, heights, temperatures, etc. We'd work in the clinic each morning, break for lunch, and then do house-visits each afternoon. I loved it all! Once we got back from our work-sites each evening we had a bit of free-time to explore the city and then after dinner we'd do devotions and recap our days together. Each team would tell about their ministry site and what they saw, did, learned, etc.

The 2nd week our team was going to spend our mornings in the capital city, assisting/watching surgeries and helping in one of the hospitals. I don't remember what I saw that 1st day but it was probably a historectomy or a prostate surgery...seems like that was the majority of what we ended up seeing. After our time in Guatemala City that morning we came back for lunch and then went to a local "hospital", Frey Guillermo. Edgar, our site leader took us to the children's ward where there were probably 5-8 babies/toddlers. As we walked from crib to crib, we were told that most of these babies were here due to a cleft lip/palate and malnutrition. In order for these babies to have surgery they had to reach 10 lbs and most of them were 5 or 6 months old and nowhere near 10lbs. I got to hold 2 in particular, Jose Miguel & Maria, both close to 6 months and soo very tiny. When we left that place after an hour or so, I knew I had to go back. Those babies tugged at my heart like nothing/no one ever had.

When I got back to the SI house that afternoon, I was told that my Dad had called. I knew something was wrong. I remember sitting up on my top bunk and journaling, wondering why my Dad had called and trying to guess at what might be wrong. I knew he wouldn't call for nothing. Free time ended and dinner came. Sometime in the middle of dinner one of the staff members came and got me and told me I had a phone call. They must have known what my Dad was about to tell me because 2 of the staff members stayed in the room while I talked to my Dad. My Dad informed me that Ryan had died and that his memorial service would be on Saturday, the day I was supposed to fly home. He told me I had the choice to come home early so I could attend the service or stay and finish my trip. I chose to stay. I don't remember much else of that conversation but what I do remember is the sweet couple from the SI staff who sat with me once I hung up the phone.

I'm not big on crying in front of others or even showing much emotion of any kind and yet there I was, far from home, surrounded by people I had only known a week, and trying to process what I had just been told. I don't know what was said or really what I did, I just remember sitting in the office crying with George and Kathy sitting with me. I don't know if they said or did anything, whether they hugged me or held me, but I do remember that they were there and that I somehow felt safe. After awhile I joined my team for our nightly devotions and once again, don't remember much, just that they loved me and cared for my broken heart. I remember singing a certain song that I can't remember much of to this day. All I remember is: "Come and join the reapers, all the kingdom seekers, come and join the weary, the faithful men." (if that's even how it goes) That song somehow became our team song and still to this day, the little I can remember of it, goes through my head.

The rest of my 2nd week of ministry was spent in the capital city each morning and then each afternoon, as soon as free-time came, I'd head over to the hospital to hold those babies. When I was holding those babies and was sitting in that place, I knew that God was calling me to serve Him in a country that I had fallen in love with, with little ones who needed to be held and loved. God had captured my heart for a people that He loves and had placed within me a passion and desire to love them. I loved their culture, their clothes, their language...I loved everything about Guatemala! Before I left to return home at the end of my 2 weeks I was told about an opportunity to return that summer for a 4 week trip...I told them I'd be there (even though I had yet to ask my parents).

I flew home to be picked up by my parents and immediately taken to my Uncle's house where family had all gathered after Ryan's service. It was so surreal to be hit with the reality that Ryan was gone and to see the grief/sadness in the faces of my family members while still on a high of sorts from all that I had experienced in my 2 weeks in Guatemala. It was sort of a clash of life and death and I was caught in the middle. My life had changed and I had grown so much in 2 short weeks...I knew I'd never be the same. I did return that summer for 4 weeks and got to spend almost every day in that hospital, holding my sweet babies, usually both at the same time! Sitting there, holding them, I felt peace and content like never before. It was that feeling of knowing that I was exactly where God wanted me and was doing what He had created me to do. This is what I was made for...loving little ones and caring for those who were so fragile.

Fast-forward to now...I've been to Guatemala at least 7 times and have served in Kenya, Cambodia and India but Guatemala has has remained my favorite and has my heart. I still feel that God has called me to serve there full-time someday. When I met my husband we had a serious talk about missions and where I felt God was calling me...We were able to serve in Guatemala on 2 different trips after being married and after his 1st day of being there, he too felt God calling him to be down there full-time. God knew even before we did that we were perfect for each other and that He'd give us the same heart's desires. We have no idea when that day will be or what exactly our area of ministry will be, but we know with all our hearts that God has called us to Guatemala and we long for that day when we can live there and be there full-time. In the mean-time, until that day comes, we remain faithful to where God has placed us and learn to love/serve in the here and now, right where He has us!

Sibling Love

Hudson's big sister loves him like no-one else! He is the 1st person she looks for in the morning and usually the last one she kisses before going to bed at night!  She is constantly wanting to hold him, talk to him, laugh for him, play with him, etc. Who knew I would be so blessed just watching these 2 together already...and it's only been 4 weeks!
Easter! Hudson was only 6 days old!
Tummy time is way more fun with sister around!
Every morning she washes her hands and then asks to hold brother! She often wants to be wherever he is and loves sitting next to him in the car!

She's getting better at actually holding/supporting him!
His first smiles were for his sister! At first I wondered if it was legit but he just kept smiling at her, over and over again!
The 1st of many walks together.
